Meet Kayman, Snack Quality Tester
Kayman's journey to is one of resilience and love. Before his first birthday, he faced more challenges than most dogs ever will. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), an enlarged heart and lungs, megaesophagus, and a neurological condition, Kayman's health issues make every day a fight. Megaesophagus, a condition where the esophagus loses its ability to move food into the stomach, means he is often hungry and struggles to eat properly — and also makes him our #1 snacker.
Kayman's Story
Kayman was found abandoned in Waterbury, Connecticut, and was saved by a compassionate animal rescuer. Although he is a young, purebred German Shepard, because of his health conditions most rescues cannot or would not take him on - and municipal animal shelters would likely euthanize him right away. Despite his tough start, he has shown incredible sweetness, love, and gentleness over the last two years. He quickly became a cherished member of our pet team.
Our founder took Kayman on as a fospice pup knowing he would have a very short life. But he's already far outlived everyone's expectations and is coming up on his third birthday this year! His health hasn't kept him from living a full life. He loves his sister, Baby, wrestles with Dexter multiple times a day, chases SuChang around until she's had enough, and keeps a close eye on the bunnies and squirrels in his backyard. He may have to eat a little differently (he gets handfed small portions throughout the day) and take a lot of lifelong medications, but he loves life and we suspect he also enjoys the extra attention.
Kayman’s role is more than just about testing snacks. His presence reminds us of the importance of compassion and the impact of rescue. Despite his health challenges, Kayman’s spirit remains unbroken. He spreads love, happiness, and drool everywhere he goes.
